Sally's Melbourne inspiration

Written by Urban Lounge Interiors on August 28th, 2017.      2 comments

Sally recently zipped over to Melbourne in the hope of gaining some inspiration from the local design scene and to see if we were missing out on anything this side of the ditch.

She spent time visiting signature hotels and motels, exploring trade shows and looking for inspiration to catch her eye. She noted that retail in general was not as buoyant as she expected and that a lot of the lifestyle boutique stores were no longer there or struggling to complete with the larger chains, however in the commercial sector contemporary lobbies provided interesting but unexpected finishes and some used bold colour as statements in expansive areas, designed to enforce the accommodations’ brand and set themselves apart from the regular classic spaces.

From the trade shows some of the trends that Sally really saw coming through included the use of natural textures, mesh sheers, pattern on pattern designs, antique feature items and bronze painted glass. There was also continued use of ‘moody’ black hues and clever, innovative glass installations to create emotive spaces - complimented by uniquely patterned rugs and artwork.

Colour wise it was interesting to see that there is still a very strong palette of colours used that are bent around an “Australia look and feel”. (lots of browns, burnt oranges and peachy tones mixed with the more contemporary greys and black). It makes you realise that even here in New Zealand whilst we are influenced by trends and colours we also have a New Zealand palette (Greens, blues, teals, chartreuse) reflective of our outdoor lifestyle and coastal location being that we are entirely surrounded by water.
